Ride Legal Velocity Wins Class 600 at Thunder on Cocoa Beach 2026

Saturday, May 16, delivered the kind of offshore racing that earns reputations.

At Thunder on Cocoa Beach (Round 3 of the 2026 IHRA Offshore National Championship), Scott McCormick and driver Bob Spitulski turned a third-place start into a commanding class victory. The #611 Ride Legal Velocity boat moved to the front on lap two and never looked back.

Four laps. 30 minutes, 17 seconds. A full lap ahead of second place.

How the Race Unfolded

The #611 boat started third, which in offshore racing is not a gift. You are racing the clock, the field, and the conditions all at once.

McCormick and Spitulski did what they do: stayed composed, managed the throttle cleanly, and took the lead on lap two. From there, it was not a race, but a statement. Hammerheads finished second, a full lap down. One Design Racing took third, also a lap back.

Round 3 also had the Dirt Legal Velocity team on the water in Bracket 700.

Driver Brad Christopher and throttleman Connor Langheim aboard their carbon-fiber Velocity Punisher 22, powered by a Mercury Racing 300R V8, showed early pace that no one in the field could match. The #789 boat led the opening lap and set the fastest single lap of the entire race: 8 minutes, 52 seconds.

The closing stages did not go their way as they fell to third, still earning a spot on the podium, though.

Both Ride Legal and Dirt Legal teams are now heading to round 4, at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, June 12–14 for the Shootout Offshore, with momentum at their backs.

For McCormick and Spitulski, Cocoa Beach was a statement. A full lap ahead of second place is the kind of margin that builds championship runs. They arrive at the Ozarks as a team that has just proven it can win cleanly, from the middle of the grid, under pressure.

For the Dirt Legal Velocity crew, the math is straightforward. Brad Christopher and Connor Langheim led the first lap and set the fastest split of the afternoon in Bracket 700. The pace is there.
